Almanzora Valley Info
Zurgena
95kms from Almeria’s Capital, Almeria, and 283m above sea level, Zurgena lies in the lower basin of
the Almanzora Valley, through which the Rio Almanzora flows, amongst fertile fields of orange, lemon
and fruit trees. The river runs straight through the village splitting the old town from the new and
there is a Mudejar style church that stands tall above the village houses. The town is clean and well
looked after by its 2,081 inhabitants. Zurgena is planning to produce olive oil.
Arboleas
Some 25kms up the valley in the Sierra de Los Filabres Mountains we come to Arboleas,
located in a much drier landscape contrasting with the fertile land at the riverside. This valley has
an abundance of citrus and fruit trees populating the area. A little smaller than Zurgena,
Arboleas is the home of the sculptor Pedro Gilabert has around 1,540 inhabitants. There are
various pretty hamlets and groups of houses sprinkled around Arboleas, such as, Casablanca,
Perla, El Prado, La Judea, El Campillo, La Cueva, San Roque,
Los Higuerales and Limaria.
Albox
You will find the small but ever growing town of Albox amongst the mountains of the Sierra
de las Estancias and the Sierra de los Filabres, amidst stunning countryside of olive groves,
orange, lemon and citrus tree plantations. It is situated at 424m above sea level and has 9,471
inhabitants. Several rivers and streams flow close to the town, including the rivers Almanzora
and Albanchez that contribute to the area's rich agricultural heritage. Albox is a typical
whitewashed village with narrow streets interspersed with small plazas; it has an air of wealth and
prosperity, as it has been the local commercial centre since the XIXth Century.
Cantoria
Cantoria has 3,382 inhabitants, lies at 382m above sea level and is a modern town that mainly relies
on the production of marble, although it sits on fertile land producing agricultural goods. The town
is more uniform with straighter streets and roads than the neighbouring villages. Also in the “marble
zone” lies Olula Del Rio, as Cantoria, this valuable asset is its main resource. There are several
archaeological sites, the Verde Olula and caves, Cueva de Humosa. As homage to its main resource, the
church has been completely decorated in marble.
