Elda, Petrer, Sax, Salinas and Villena Info.
Elda and Petrer
You’ll find the town of Elda situated on the banks of the Vinalopo River in the Elda Valley. It's
is surrounded by mountains and is the financial and administrative capital of the region. It is also
linked with Alicante and Madrid by an excellent transport and road network. The region also provides excellent
shopping not only in the town centre but in the neighbouring town of Petrer which separates itself
from Elda by a single street; the houses on the left belong to Elda, the houses on the right belong
to Petrer. Each has their own Castle – Elda Castle and Petrer Castle. Both provide
most branches of the main banks. You can also find a Sports Complex here that offers varied sports and leisure activities.
Both are situated about 40kms from Alicante Airport and the sandy beaches of the Costa
Blanca.
Sax and Salinas
The first thing you’ll see, as you approach Sax, is Sax Castle perched on a rocky hilltop,
originally built by the Moors and rebuilt by the Christians in 1239. Sax has 8664 inhabitants and
is situated in the Alto Vinalopo at 471m above sea level. It has a railway station on the Madrid
to Alicante line and is also well connected by road to the surrounding areas. Alicante Airport and
the Costa Blanca beaches are around half an hours drive away. The small village of Salinas, with it’s
beautiful church, is about 10km from Sax.
Up until the 2nd half of the 20th century the area has relied on agriculture: vines, olives and cereal
crops. A small 'huerta' irrigated by the Vinalopo River grows fruit trees and vegetables close to Sax.
In the 19th century, and in particularly at the start of the 20th century, Sax began to branch out
towards other activities such as flour mills, distilleries and making blinds and cardboard. Today
most of Sax's working population are involved in the industrial sector (footwear, blinds, leather
works and furniture). Agriculture, however, still remains an important activity, especially vines
for wine.
Villena
Villena is the capital of the Alto Vinalopo district, houses 33,455 inhabitants and sits at 505m
above sea level. Villena is an important crossroads between Castile, Murcia and Valencia and serves
both as a gateway and a border crossing. The imposing La Atalaya castle is the first view of the
province of Alicante, when approached from Madrid. The city's old quarter lies in the shadow of the
castle and from here you are able to pick out all the churches that tower above the tiny houses.
Villena has a mainline train station on the Madrid to Alicante line and is only around 40mins drive
to Alicante Airport, almost all of it by toll free motorway. The town is also known for growing dry
land crops and its famous Villena wine. Today it is a modern city with a large children's footwear
industry and a growing services and commercial sector serving the surrounding villages.
The excellent sports installations of Villena offer the possibility of practicing sports, such as
swimming, dance, gymnastics, skating, athletics, mountain climbing, tennis or football.
